Have you ever studied something carefully and then struggled to remember it a few days later? Forgetting information is a normal part of human memory. The concept known as the Forgetting Curve helps explain why information can become harder to recall when it is not revisited.
The Forgetting Curve is associated with the work of psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus, who studied how memory changes over time. His research suggested that information can be forgotten relatively quickly when it is not reinforced through additional learning or recall.
The exact rate of forgetting differs between people and situations. The important idea is that memory can weaken over time without retrieval or review.
Learning does not automatically mean that information will remain easy to access forever. New information competes with other information, and memories may become harder to retrieve when they are not used.
This is one reason why reading a chapter once may not be enough for long-term learning.
Regularly returning to information gives you additional opportunities to retrieve it. Instead of waiting until the day before an exam, you can review important topics at different points during your preparation.
Simply reading the same information again is not the only way to review. Close your textbook and try to explain the topic from memory. Use flashcards, practice questions, or short self-tests to check what you can retrieve.
Spacing your reviews over time can help you avoid relying entirely on last-minute study. You might review a new concept shortly after learning it and then revisit it again later. The exact timing can be adjusted according to the difficulty of the material and how well you remember it.
The Forgetting Curve highlights an important lesson: forgetting is normal, but learning can be strengthened through repeated retrieval and review. Instead of expecting yourself to remember everything after one study session, build revision into your learning process.
