Highlighting is one of the most common study habits, but using too much color can reduce its usefulness. When almost every sentence is highlighted, nothing stands out. Effective highlighting should help you identify important information quickly when you return to the page later.
One of the simplest ways to improve highlighting is to read the section before marking it. If you highlight while reading every sentence for the first time, it can be difficult to decide which information is genuinely important.
Read a paragraph, understand its meaning, and then decide whether a specific sentence or phrase deserves emphasis.
Focus on definitions, key facts, important terms, formulas, dates, and central ideas. Supporting examples do not always need to be highlighted if the main concept is already clear.
A useful rule is to highlight only enough information to remind yourself of the main idea.
If you highlight an entire paragraph, the highlighted section no longer helps your eyes find the most important information. Instead, highlight a few words or one important sentence whenever possible.
If you like using multiple colors, give each color a consistent purpose. For example, one color could represent definitions while another represents important examples. However, you do not need many colors to create effective notes.
Highlighting should not be your only study technique. After marking important information, cover the highlighted section and try to recall what it says. You can also turn highlighted concepts into questions or flashcards.
When you return to the material later, check whether your highlighted sections actually help you. If you can quickly identify the key ideas, your system is working. If almost every line is highlighted, consider reducing the amount.
Highlighting is most useful when it is selective and purposeful. Read first, identify the main ideas, and highlight only information that will help you understand or remember the topic later. Used correctly, highlighting can make revision faster without turning your textbook into a page full of colors.
